Warnings and signs that someone may be at immediate risk for attempting suicide and how to prevent them.

Recognizing the warning signs of suicide can help prevent a crisis. These signs may include:

  • Talking about wanting to die or kill oneself, expressing hopelessness, or saying things like "I wish I were dead" or "Everyone would be better off without me”

  • Mentioning specific plans or seeking lethal means, such as acquiring weapons or stockpiling pills.

  • Withdrawing from social contact and isolating oneself.

  • Giving away possessions, making final arrangements, or saying goodbye as if it’s permanent.

  • Engaging in risky or self-destructive behaviors like substance abuse or reckless driving.

  • Sudden calmness after a period of depression, which may indicate a decision to attempt suicide.

  • Persistent sadness, mood swings, irritability, or extreme anxiety.

  • Feeling trapped, hopeless, or like a burden to others.

  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns.

If someone is at immediate risk:

  • Call 911 or emergency services and inform them it’s a mental health crisis.

  • Contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 for confidential support.

  • : Don’t hesitate to ask if they are thinking about suicide. This shows concern and opens communication.

  • : Provide a nonjudgmental space for them to express their feelings. Avoid dismissing their emotions or debating their thoughts.

  • : Suggest contacting mental health professionals, therapists, or crisis hotlines for support.

  • Foster connections through social engagement and family support.

  • Help them identify coping strategies and reasons for living (e.g., relationships, hobbies).

  • Reduce access to lethal means by securing firearms, medications, and other dangerous items.

In all cases, take suicidal thoughts seriously—they are a cry for help that requires immediate attention.
