Girl, 5 almost swallowed a rusty nail while eating a slice of birthday cup cake.

A five year old girl, Olivia Watson nearly swallowed a small rusty nail that was in her cup cake in her uncle's birthday party.
Olivia spotted the rusty 1 and half inch nail when she was about to bite into the the birthday cake.

Her uncle's partner, Kelly Winstanley admitted that the 1 and half inch nail would have puntured her throat if she had swallowed it before it was spotted.

According to her report,

“We were just serving the cupcake and my sister-in-law Kirsty was about to give a slice to Olivia's throat and it's lucky she clocked it.

“There was this rusty nail and it was about one and half inches long, if Kirsty had'nt seen it, Olivia could have eaten it.

“It was in the middle of the cake but thankfully the way it was sliced, it was spotted just before serving”.

The family who bought the cake reported that the box in which the cake was in when they bought it wasn't damaged, so it remains unclear if the nail got into it while it was baked or while it was in the house.

She then added,

“My brother-in-law contacted Co-op via twitter to express his concerns about what happened, there was no apology as such, they just asked for the product details.

“They said they would ask the supplier to investigate and would credit our account.

“A number of people had already started eating the cake thankfully no one seems to have suffered any ill effects”.

A Co-op spokesperson, in response to the situation said,

“The health and safety of our customers is our top priority and we apologise that on this occasion this product has fallen short of our high standards.

“We immediately started an investigation with our supplier and resolved the matter directly with the customers”.

Kelly added, saying,

“If any of the kids had swallowed that nail, it could have easily puntured their oesophagus. The last thing you would expect to find, it looks too small to have fallen off a piece of machinery into the mixture so we don't know if it has been human error.

“Regardless of what happened, the company could have delt with this in a better manner.
“They said that they would make a gesture by way of an apology, but it could have seriously injured a child”.
