Jordan is No democracy:Jordan arrests 1,000 teachers in crack down on Union.

Jordan is no democracy, but has been regarded as more pluralistic and tolerant of dissent than neighbouring states such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Protest are permitted up to a point and the media is relatively free to criticize governmental policies.

The recent pressure that the Jordan government has been giving to the teacher Union members has been growing drastically as Union members are arrested without trials in the court.
The Jordanian government says that the decisions to shut down the Teacher's Syndicate and arrest it leaders was taken independently by the judiciary "in reference to economic crimes".

A gag order imposed on the Jordanian media has banned all but the bearest coverage of the arrests, the charges against union members and the resulting demonstrations.
Last month the police sealed the Union branches across all Jordan, the union was banned from operating for two years and it thirtheen elected council members were arrested on secret allegations. As emergency laws used to fight the corona virus pandemic to prevent the further widespread of the virus have been used to detain some of the thousands of teachers who have turned out to protest against the government.

Some government supporters have cited the campaign against the union as part of a larger regional struggle between Arab Monarchies and Muslim Brotherhood. The Jordanian government has been wary of teachers organizing, the syndicate was banned for more than half a century until 2011.the wage increase the teachers union negotiated last year was frozen by government amid a wider suspension of public-sector pay rises as a result of corona virus pandemic.

Asem Al-Omari,the lawyer advising the teachers syndicate said that the government was anticipating economic troubles in the month ahead and was trying to clear the field of potential opposition.

Demonstrations are still being held around the country despite forceful tactics that had been implemented and enforced by the government to reduce the protests.
