Minister of works speaks on why third mainland bridge was being shutdown for six months.

Following the Ministry of Works recent announcement on the shutting down of the Lagos State third mainland bridge that is going to be shut for a period of 6 months for maintenance reason to avert collapse.

In a conference in Lagos state, Olukayode Popoola who is the controller of works in the ministry said that the Lagos third mainland bridge was last renovated 8 years ago,and that the renovations and maintenance are crucially needed to avert a collapse of the bridge.

Popoola announced that one lane will be closed while the other will be opened for use while the bridge is being worked on,According to him, "One lane will be closed during the maintenance works while the other remains open till the completion of the lane under repairs".he noted that the shutdown will begin on 24th of July as the rehabilitation will commence on the closed part of the road.Papoola cited that the first half of the six months will be used for one part of the bridge will the other half will be used on the other lane.

In a statement Popoola said; 

"We don't want the bridge to collapse,we want to replace worn-out components and joints.The bridge will be partially closed and there will be a diversion or traffic from midnight to 1pm every morning from movement from Oworonsoki traffic only on the Lagos Island bound lane.

"This will be in place for three months for the repairs for the Oworonsiki bound lane.

"Motorists are also advised to ply the alternative routes of Carter bridge through Iddo to Oyingbo to join Adekunle ramp inward Oworonsiki or from ijora through western avenue to Ikorodu Road.
